Alan Banov is an employment and labor lawyer
who has been defending the rights of working people for
over 30 years. Mr. Banov graduated with honors from the
George Washington University National Law Center, then
served for eight years as an attorney in the Office of
General Counsel of the National Labor Relations Board,
including five years with the Appellate Court Branch.
In 1980 Mr. Banov started his own practice. He has represented
thousands of employees in discrimination, civil service,
overtime, adverse action, wrongful discharge, and breach
of contract cases.
Mr. Banov was elected two terms as President of the Metropolitan
Washington Employment Lawyers Association (MWELA), the
local affiliate of the National Employment Lawyers Association
(NELA). He has served on the Board of MWELA since its
inception in 1985 and before his election as President,
he served as Secretary and Vice President for MWELA. He
was Co-chair of NELA's National Convention in Washington
in 2000.
He is also a mediator for the Superior Court of D.C.
and the Montgomery County Human Relations Commission.
As a trial lawyer, Mr. Banov has represented thousands
of working people in individual and in class action cases,
in court and administrative proceedings.
Mr. Banov is persistent and is known for his no-nonsense
approach to clients' cases.
- He steadily pressed a class-action case against the
U.S. Bureau of Prisons for unpaid overtime until it
settled after 13 years, with the Bureau agreeing to
pay some 1,000 claimants $14,750,000 plus Mr. Banov's
attorneys' fees and costs
- In another case, after considerable litigation, including
a landmark decision by the D.C. Court of Appeals, Mr.
Banov obtained a good settlement twelve years after
he was hired.
- Mr. Banov has been a road runner for 16 years and
has run three marathons. His motto is, "It's
the long run that counts." Because of his tenacity
in aggressively representing his clients, Robert
Fitzpatrick
(one of the best employment lawyers in the country)
has called Mr. Banov a "bulldog."

Mr. Banov has frequently lectured and published in the
areas of employment law, labor law, and litigation. In
the last few years he has presented talks or moderated
in the following venues:

- Moderator of a panel of judges speaking on effective
appellate advocacy at the 2000 NELA National Convention

Mr. Banov is also a long-time active Democrat. A former
chair of the District 18 Democratic Caucus in Montgomery
County, in 2002 he was elected as an at-large member
of the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee.
In 2006 he was re-elected to the MCDCC and was elected
Vice-Chair by his MCDCC colleagues.
